So begins The Boy Who Shook Hands With The King (Part One), a read-aloud story for young children told in rhyming couplets about the King who decides to go on a Royal Walkabout against the objections of the Lords and Ladies in the castle. They insist that His Majesty walks on a red carpet that is so wide that the King wont have to mingle with the rowdy people in the town.

When a small boy in a distant village learns of the Royal Walkabout, he sneaks away from home and runs all the way to the town and right on to the red carpet. Will the King order him to get off his royal carpet? What the boy says to the King makes all the difference, and the crowd commemorates the unforgettable event. When he gets back home, his mother is angry with him for deserting her, but the boy vows to preserve the memory of the his special day.
